Morning Musings for Saturday, April 7, 2012
Today, we take on the issue of women, a must-win demographic for the Democrats this fall, and taxes. What a combination.
- So are you better off today, m’dear than you were before Barack Obama took office? Let’s see. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, since the stimulus was passed, women’s unemployment has risen from 7.0% to 8.1%; the number of female employees declined by 683,000. And the largest hurdle, the poverty rate for women has risen to 14.5% from 13.9% in 2009 (the highest in 17 years). And that’s just for starters.
- Then we have this brouhaha over whether women should be admitted as members at August National. Who cares. Three weeks ago, I filled my tank with regular at $3.49/gal; Wednesday, it was $4.35/gal. And I should care about whether women can be members at an elite golf club, when most men can’t get a membership either. What a joke!
- Back here at home, the over-taxed haven known as Illinois, we now owe another another $54 billion in retiree health benefits. That’s on top of $89 billion in unfunded pension obligations. Yes, Illinois, home to five state-funded pension systems, 631 police and fire pension systems, and the locally funded Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF). There’s not enough coffee to get me through this day.
